1. Stop the source of particles first

An air purifier cannot make the reading fall if new fine particles are continuously entering the room. Common sources include:

  • Cooking, frying, toasting, candles, incense, fireplaces and wood stoves
  • Cigarette, cigar or vaping smoke
  • Aerosol sprays, cleaning products and some personal-care products
  • Dust from sanding, construction, renovation or a recently disturbed carpet
  • Outdoor wildfire smoke or heavy traffic pollution entering through windows
  • A furnace, heat pump or ventilation system moving dusty air

Turn off or pause the likely source, close windows and exterior doors, and allow the purifier to run on a higher manual speed. Cooking particles can remain suspended after the cooking stops, especially in a small room. Use a range hood that vents outdoors when available, but remember that the purifier may need additional time to reduce the remaining particles.

2. Check the filter and pre-filter

A loaded filter can reduce airflow enough that the purifier no longer cleans the room effectively. Inspect the filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • The protective plastic packaging has been removed

3. Look for blocked airflow or a clogged path

The purifier needs a clear intake and outlet. Check for:

  • Furniture, curtains or bedding covering the intake
  • A wall or corner directly against the intake or outlet
  • Dust buildup on the grille
  • A foreign object inside the intake
  • A fan that sounds strained or moves noticeably less air than before

Unplug the purifier before removing a grille or inspecting inside. Keep the clearances specified in the owner’s manual; if no distance is given, leave open space around both the intake and outlet rather than placing the unit tightly against a wall.

If the fan is running but airflow is weak after the filter and grilles are clean, the filter may be saturated, the fan may be obstructed, or the motor may be wearing out.

4. Improve placement and operating settings

Place the purifier in the room where the particles are being generated, with its intake and outlet unobstructed. Avoid hiding it under a desk, behind a sofa or inside a shelving unit. Keep it away from an open window, kitchen exhaust, humidifier mist and direct drafts that could distort the sensor reading.

For troubleshooting, use a steady manual fan speed rather than Auto mode. Auto mode may reduce fan speed when the sensor briefly reports cleaner air, or it may respond slowly to changing conditions. Once the reading has fallen and the source is controlled, Auto mode may be appropriate for maintaining air quality.

Room size matters too. A purifier designed for a small room may not reduce PM2.5 quickly in a large open-plan area, a room with high ceilings or a space with open doors. Closing the door and testing one room at a time can show whether capacity is part of the problem.

5. Check the PM2.5 sensor

Many purifiers estimate PM2.5 with a small optical particle sensor. That sensor can collect dust or be affected by placement, airflow, humidity or aerosols. A high displayed number does not always mean the HEPA filter is failing.

Look for the sensor inlet or outlet in the manual. Keep it clear, and clean it only as directed. Some manufacturers allow gentle cleaning with a soft brush or low-pressure air; others specify a different procedure. Do not spray cleaner, water or compressed air into the purifier unless the instructions explicitly allow it.

Also check whether the display is showing PM2.5 concentration, an air-quality score, or another estimate. These readings are not interchangeable. If the purifier provides a reset, calibration or sensor-cleaning procedure, follow the exact instructions rather than resetting the filter indicator alone. A filter-life reset does not necessarily recalibrate the particle sensor.

6. Compare the reading with another monitor

If the purifier continues to show a high reading after the source is gone and the filter and airflow checks are complete, compare it with a separate PM2.5 monitor placed nearby. Allow both devices time to sample the same air, and keep them away from direct drafts, windows and humidifier mist.

  • If both devices show high readings, investigate an ongoing source, outdoor infiltration, ventilation or insufficient purifier capacity.
  • If the separate monitor falls while the purifier display stays high, the purifier’s sensor may need cleaning, calibration or service.
  • If the readings differ substantially, do not assume either device is laboratory-accurate. Consumer sensors use different designs and algorithms.

High humidity, steam and fine droplets can sometimes be interpreted as particles by optical sensors. Keep humidifiers and vaporizers away from the purifier and avoid comparing readings during or immediately after a shower, cooking or aerosol use.

7. Check the drum, bag or electrical components only if applicable

Unlike wet-dry vacuums, most air purifiers do not have a collection drum or dust bag. However, a purifier can still have an overloaded filter compartment or an internal dust buildup that restricts airflow. Follow the service limits in the manual and do not open the motor or control compartment while the unit is plugged in.

If the purifier has a burning smell, damaged cord, overheating case, repeated shutdowns, unusual electrical noise or a fan that will not start, unplug it and stop using it. Electrical repairs should be handled by the manufacturer, an authorized service center or a qualified professional. Do not bypass a safety switch or operate the purifier with covers removed.

When to replace the filter or the purifier

A replacement filter is the sensible next step when the current filter is visibly loaded, overdue according to the manufacturer’s schedule, damp, damaged or causing a major loss of airflow. Match the replacement by the purifier’s exact model and confirm whether it includes a HEPA layer, carbon layer or separate pre-filter.

Consider replacing the purifier, rather than only the filter, when the fan has weak airflow, the unit repeatedly shuts down, replacement filters are unavailable, the filter door no longer seals, or the PM2.5 sensor remains implausible after the recommended cleaning and reset procedure. If the purifier is still under warranty, contact the manufacturer before opening the housing or buying a replacement unit.

The quickest troubleshooting order is: stop particle sources, close the room, inspect the filter and pre-filter, clear the airflow path, run a steady fan speed, clean the sensor as directed, and compare the display with another monitor.
